Safe Loading and Unloading on Site

The loading and unloading operation should always be carried out under the supervision of a competent person who is aware of the hazards present and the necessary precautions which need to be taken.

On arrival transport delivery drivers must ensure the vehicle and trailer brakes have been applied and locked out before unloading begins.   Vehicle keys are to be removed from the ignition until load has been fully unloaded or loaded.   Whilst the vehicle is being loaded or unloaded the driver is to stay in the designated safety zone.  The driver must never be in the exclusion zone while the forklift is loading.   The exclusion zone is an area marked with a broken yellow line outside the marked loading area.   Whilst the forklift is in this area no pedestrians, including the driver, shall enter the area and while there is a pedestrian in this area no forklift shall enter the area.   The safety zone is the vehicle cabin or:

  • The dock landing at the north east end of the plant
  • The seat on the store wall at the west end of the plant

On completion of loading the transport delivery driver must count inventory and return paperwork  to the site contact.

Vehicles must not be moved from site until all loads have been secured.

Courier drivers, who do not need the use of a forklift driver, MUST turn off the engine and apply the handbrake before exiting their vehicle.

Where unloading cannot be done safely, leave the load on the vehicle until safe unloading conditions can be provided.
